Your Dirty Laundry - The germiest rooms in the house

Here at Vitaloxide.com, we have been blogging about the germiest rooms in the house… so far, the bathroom comes in second to the kitchen!

Next on the list… the laundry room.

It seems innocent enough but the facts are that your dirty laundry is full of bacteria and germs. And there is the possibility that your laundry is even more dirty after you wash it. Bacteriologists say that dirty laundry and the washing machine are crawling with bacteria that find their way into your clothes and then… onto you.

If your laundry includes under garments, you are introducing bacteria into the entire load. Charles Gerba, a professional of microbiology at the University of Arizona, has done extensive research into washing machines and the germs that thrive there. “If you wash a load of just underwear, there will be about 100 million E. coli in the wash water and they can be transmitted to the next load of laundry.” Just as likely, if you wash a load of various items that include underwear, you are essentially spreading the germs to the entire load.  That number increases significantly with small children in the household. Fecal matter can carry a number of different germs including hepatitis virus, norovirus, rotovirus, salmonella and E. coli. Aside from underwear, your bath towels and any clothing worn to the gym or P.E. class at school can also carry staph bacteria that can be spread the same way. Similarly, if someone in your home has been sick, their bedding and clothes will carry their germs.

Detergents alone cannot tackle the job

Relying on your laundry detergent alone will not eliminate the germs and rather than washing them away, your machine helps to distribute the germs throughout your laundry while many remain in the machine waiting to contaminate your next load!

Many people believe the hot water cycle on their washer will kill germs but temperatures need to reach from 140 to 150 degrees and household washing machines do not reach these temperatures. “For bacteria to actually die, the hot water would have to be at a temperature above what your skin could tolerate. Most people can tolerate a temperature of 110 degrees for little bits of time, but that's the most we can do.” according to Sarah Aguirre of About.com.

Besides the germs spread from washing your under garments, the dirty laundry generated from your trip to the gym is also full of bacteria. Philip Tierno, a professor of microbiology and pathology at the New York University School of Medicine said bacteria from the skin, such as staphylococcus, can be found on clothing and towels. And don’t forget your gym shoes! According to Physicians.com, your gym shoes absorb a huge amount of dangerous bacteria.   So… what is the answer?? Adding Vital Oxide to the wash will do the trick of eliminating germs and without the worry of bleaching the color from your clothing. As a hospital level disinfectant, Vital Oxide is proven to kill the germs found in the laundry, including E coli, Staph and MRSA. Just add a cup to the wash cycle and no more germs!
